To Lose A Son

Goodbye little boy.
I've loved you so
As only a mother can.
I've brought you here
Today to send
You back to God's warm hand.

I remember when
I held you close,
And kissed away your tears.
Your tiny hand
In mine would help
To drive away your fears.

As all little boys
Grow into men,
They leave their moms behind
To face the world
On their own terms.
They cut the ties that bind.

Tho' mothers hate
And fear the day
Their sons grow up and away,
They know that way
Down deep inside
The little boy will stay.

You didn't heed
The warnings, son,
That I tried to instill.
You made your way
Into the world,
A world which loves to kill.

Amazing Grace,
How sweet the sound,
It saved a wretch again.
I brought you here
Today to send
You home to the Promised Land.
